post-title

Ubicloud is building open free portable cloud which will be an alternative to AWS, Google and Azure cloud services. Ubicloud announced that they received 16 Million Dollar seed funding to build portable cloud.

Ubicloud provides cloud services on bare metal providers, such as Hetzner, OVH, or AWS Bare Metal. The problem with existing cloud service providers are vendor lock in.  Initially it will look better but later their costs will sky rocket and it may turn nightmare to most of the companies.

Another important thing is, Cloud service providers are providing various services and their code is always closed source. We don't know what is happening behind the scene, how their algorithm works and how they calculate their billing etc. It will be interesting to work with cloud service provider whose code is open sourced. We can rely on the provider and their services. Ubicloud is built using Ruby and the source code is available in their Github repo.

Ubicloud is founded by Ozgun Erdogan, Umur Cubukcu, and Daniel Farina. Prior to Ubicloud, Umur and Ozgun were two of the co-founders at Citus Data, creators of the distributed PostgreSQL database. Microsoft acquired Citus Data in 2019. The founders have great background in cloud technologies.

Ubicloud plans to build 20 most used cloud services. They currently provide Compute instance (Dedicated virtual machines), Managed PostgreSQL,  Github action integration, Block storage. They are planning to increase the offering and the seed fund helps to achieve the roadmap.
